Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

What is Stereotactic Breast Biopsy?

A minimally invasive image guided procedure that allows our radiologists to accurately sample suspicious masses or calcifications in the breast that have been identified on your mammogram.

Why is Stereotactic Breast Biopsy a better alternative?

Not only is the procedure safe and effective it is highly accurate, performed under local anesthesia and takes less than an hour to perform.  You may return to routine activities immediately following the procedure.  Results are typically available 48 hours after the biopsy.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is performed with the patient on her abdomen on a specially designed table with an aperture for the breast.  The breast is held in position by compression during the procedure and the area of interest is localized utilizing low dose stereotactic mammographic images.  After sterilizing and anesthetizing the skin,

a number of biopsy samples are obtained of the area of interest.  A tiny surgical clip may be placed at the site of biopsy to accurately mark the location in case surgical biopsy is required.  Following the procedure, a sterile dressing is applied.  Biopsy site care instructions are discussed and the radiologist performing the biopsy provides you with a contact number where they can be reached for any questions or concerns.  The patient then leaves resuming routine activity.  Biopsy results are typically available within 48-72 hours and called to you by the radiologist that performed the biopsy.
