Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy
What is Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy?
Ultrasound guided breast biopsies use continuous ultrasound imaging to visualize abnormalities in the breast while they are being biopsied with a needle. It is most useful for masses that cannot be felt and have been detected by ultrasound rather than on a mammogram.
Why is Ultrasound Guided Biopsy a better alternative?
This technique allows very accurate sampling of lesions without the need to undergo surgery. It is performed under local anesthesia and takes less than one hour. Following the procedure the patient can resume routine activities.
How is the procedure performed?
The patient is positioned on her back and the abnormality of interest is localized with the ultrasound. Subsequently, the breast is prepped under sterile procedure, anesthetized and a number of biopsy samples are obtained of the area of interest. A tiny surgical clip may be placed at the site of biopsy to accurately mark the location in case surgical biopsy is required. Following the procedure, a sterile dressing is applied. Biopsy site care instructions are discussed and the radiologist performing the biopsy provides you with a contact number where they can be reached for any questions or concerns. The patient then leaves resuming routine activity. Biopsy results are typically available within 48-72 hours and called to you by the radiologist that performed the biopsy.
How can I schedule an exam or inquire for more information?
